Shelly Bay, Wellington
For over twenty years the former military buildings at Shelly Bay, Wellington has been a hub for a small but vibrant artistic community. The base itself is nestled in quiet tree-covered hills along a twisting coastal road, with spectacular views across the harbour and into the city. This backdrop has hosted every artistic discipline, from painters, potters, poets and musicians over the years, and has become an integral part of the arts scene in Wellington.
Although it's survival at the base has been tenuous at best and never certain, the recent sale and lease of land for development in the area is seen as a further blow to the community and its future.
This projects aim is to highlight the artists that call Shelly Bay home, chronicle their work and environment, and give us an insight into a community that may not be with us for long.
